Vice President Kamala Harris copied former President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to abolish tip taxes.
In acknowledging Culinary Union Local 226’s presence at the Nevada campaign event on Saturday, Harris promised to “raise the minimum wage” and “remove taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers” if elected president in November.
Following Trump’s declaration at a June rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, that his administration would “not levy taxes on tips” if elected president, Harris has made this commitment.
“I am aware that Culinary 226 is present,” Harris declared to the assembly. “Also, as everyone in Nevada is aware, the culinary union has played a significant role in setting the standard for workers’ rights and dignity in our nation. I must admit, I’ve been quite pleased to work beside you for many years. We collaborated to take tough measures against wage theft when I served as California’s attorney general. We worked together to achieve paid family leave and medical leave while I was a US senator, and we celebrated your historic contract victory here in Vegas earlier this year. And I swear to all of you here that we will continue the fight for American workers after I become president. This includes raising the minimum wage and eliminating tip taxes for employees in the service and hospitality industries.”
At a roundtable discussion in June at an African-American church in Michigan, Trump reaffirmed his assurance that his government would “not resort to tax tips.”
As per Trump’s statement, “let everyone, including your waiters and waitresses, know that many people receive tips. Tip-receiving individuals include caddies and car attendants, among many more. The tax is going away right away, we won’t be taxing tips.”
Trump said that Harris “simply wants it for political purposes,” criticizing her recent pledge to remove tip taxes.
Trump posted on Truth Social, saying, “Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ time is ending and is starting to get pummeled in the polls, just plagiarized my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy. The difference is that she wants it politically, but won’t! She lacks original ideas and is limited to borrowing from me, which is why this was a TRUMP idea. Recall that Kamala has called for the largest tax increase in history, but this will not occur.”
Additionally, witnesses spotted the former president writing “Vote Trump, No Tax on Tip” on a $500 tip he left at a restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
