President Donald Trump recently campaigned in New York and promised to bring back state and local tax benefits (SALT) if he won.

The former president talked about his Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum rally in Uniondale, New York, in a post on Truth Social. The event is on Wednesday. Trump asked people what they “have to lose” and said he would “turn” New York “around.”

Trump wrote, “Tomorrow, Nassau Coliseum on Long Island will be a really big deal. There will be a TON of Patriots there! First time in many decades that we really have a chance to win, New York. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE? There are hundreds of thousands of migrants, crime is at an all-time high, terrorists are coming in droves, and prices are going through the roof. Pick Trump! I’ll fix it, reclaim SALT, lower your taxes, and a lot more.”

As Breitbart News has said before, SALT payments have been around since February 1913, when the 16th Amendment to the US Constitution became law. The bill is “controversial,” though because it causes some Democratic-leaning states to subsidize and raise “income and property taxes.”

“The SALT exemption has been around since 1913, when the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was signed into law. This amendment gave Congress the power to tax wages. But a lot of people don’t like it because it helps liberal states that charge higher property and income taxes. Because of this, people in only ten states will get 62% of the SALT benefits. In those two states, that means an average SALT discount of $4,200. In the other 40 states, that means an average reduction of only $2,300.”

The Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 put a $10,000 limit on SALT payments.

In February, the House stopped a bill that would have briefly raised the limit on SALT payments to $2,000.

Trump also said he would work with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and Gov. Eric Adams (D) to make sure the state has “the funding to bring it back to levels it hasn’t seen in 50 years.”

“People are running away; maybe we can get them to “flee back!” Trump added. “It’s Wednesday at 7 p.m. EST, so see you at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum!”
