This week, former President Donald Trump said that if John Deer moves production to Mexico, they will put a 200% tax on the goods it brings into the US. He did this while standing between two John Deere tractors.
Trump said he would protect industrial jobs in the United States at a roundtable in Smithton, Pennsylvania, with farmers, former Acting Director of National Security Ric Grenell, Republican candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate Dave McCormick, and former U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY).
“I just saw John Deere trucks behind me. John Deere is something I know a lot about. As you know, the company said a few days ago that they were going to move a lot of their manufacturing to Mexico. I love the company, but,” Trump said.
“I’m telling John Deere right now that if they do that, we will put a 200% tax on everything they want to sell in the US,” Trump said.
Breitbart News reported that John Deere laid off hundreds of workers in June, and the cuts started on August 30. The company was planning to do the same at plants in East Moline, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.
“They haven’t begun yet. I think they made have made up their minds, but maybe not,” he said.
Trump said that any other company that sends industry to Mexico to find cheaper labor would have to pay big tariffs. Since it hurts American farms and factory workers.
He said, “They think they can make things cheaper in Mexico and then sell them here for the same prices they did before. They’ll make a lot of money by firing our workers and taking away our jobs.”
Trump praised the company’s goods and said he buys them himself. He said that putting a tax on John Deere would have one of two outcomes.
The tax would either make the US a lot of money or John Deere would not build plants in Mexico.
