On Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris said that her and President Joe Biden’s administration were sending $157 million in emergency aid to people in Lebanon. This was after saying that each Hurricane Helene victim would get $750 to cover their immediate needs.
With the extra $157 million, she said, the U.S. would have given “over $385 million” to Lebanon in just one year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on October 4 that it had already given $45 million in emergency aid, with $23 million going to people in Florida, $17 million to people in North Carolina, and $4.5 million to people in South Carolina.
At the same time, thousands of Americans lost their homes, jobs, belongings, pets, and sometimes even family members when Hurricane Helene hit the southeast of the country last weekend. They are only getting $750 in emergency aid. Hurricane victims can ask FEMA for a variety of extra help. This includes Displacement Assistance, which pays for a person to stay in a hotel or motel while they work on finding a new place to live. Assistance with home repairs or replacement, rental assistance, personal property assistance, medical and dental assistance for injuries caused by the accident, funeral assistance, and child care assistance are also available.
After a week, almost 300,000 homes and businesses in the United States still didn’t have power on Friday. Hurricane Harvey killed more than 220 Americans and left hundreds more missing. It’s still early in the recovery process, and some towns can only get goods by air because they can’t get it any other way.
Even so, Harris wrote on X, “The people of Lebanon are facing an emergency situation that is getting worse. I worry about the safety and well-being of civilians in Lebanon who are hurting, and I will keep trying to help meet their needs.”
“In order to do that, the US will send an extra nearly $157 million to Lebanon to help with things like food, housing, water, safety, and sanitation for people who have been forced to leave their homes because of the recent war. With this extra help, the U.S. has given over $385 million to Lebanon in aid over the last year.”
