President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico have the usual suspects—economists, bureaucrats, and CNN pundits—sounding the alarm. Trump’s plan, aimed at curbing the flow of drugs like fentanyl and tackling border security, is already rattling globalists and triggering left-wing outrage. But here’s the kicker: this is exactly why Americans elected him—to prioritize national security and economic independence over pandering to foreign nations.

Trump took to Truth Social to lay out his reasoning: “As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before… On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”

Canada and Mexico account for nearly 30% of U.S. trade, with Canada sending a whopping 75% of its exports south of the border. In other words, these tariffs would hit them where it hurts. Canada, ever the polite neighbor, responded with a predictable statement emphasizing the “mutually beneficial” nature of trade, while Mexico has yet to comment.

Meanwhile, critics like Catherine Rampell of CNN are in full meltdown mode, warning that tariffs could raise the price of everything from avocados to aluminum. “If you voted for Trump because you thought he was going to bring down the cost of housing, a lot of our lumber, cement and other materials come from Canada,” Rampell fretted on air. Of course, these same critics had no problem with skyrocketing inflation under Biden, which hit everyday Americans far harder than any tariff ever could.

Here’s the reality: Trump’s tariffs are about more than just economics—they’re about national security and leverage. By targeting Canada and Mexico, Trump is sending a clear message: stop the flow of illegal drugs and get serious about border security, or pay the price. This isn’t about punishing Americans with higher costs, as the left claims; it’s about making sure foreign nations prioritize their responsibilities.

And let’s not forget the bigger picture. While Biden spent four years bowing to globalist interests and leaving the border wide open, Trump is stepping back in with the same America First approach that delivered unprecedented economic growth during his first term. Democrats can whine about the cost of avocados all they want, but the real cost is their open-borders policies that have led to unchecked drug trafficking and economic insecurity.

Trump’s proposed tariffs might ruffle feathers, but they’ll deliver results—just like his renegotiation of NAFTA into the USMCA, which Democrats swore would never work. Once again, Trump is proving that leadership means making tough decisions, not playing nice to avoid upsetting foreign governments.
