Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) defended a recent law he signed to combat illegal immigration in the Sunshine State, making it abundantly clear that one can’t develop a thriving economy “based on illegality.” This legislation made Florida the biggest state in the nation to perform complete E-Verify for employment.

When questioned about the possibility of specific sectors of the workforce being affected by illegal immigrant families fleeing the state as a result of the immigration measure the governor signed into law, DeSantis said that the economy cannot be founded on “illegality” in the first place.

“According to Florida law, you must be a resident lawfully in order to work. That’s the law, and E-Verify is a means to ensure that the long-standing Florida law is upheld,” he added, referring to the measure he signed last week.

He noted that along with President Biden’s open border policy, there are basically incentives for people to enter the nation illegally. “You cannot develop a strong economy on the basis of illegality,” he stated.

“Individuals have the idea that there are incentives to be able to come,” he said, and emphasized that they believe the U.S. would not enforce its own rules, saying that “this is one reason for the numbers.”

“I believe that a wall should be built to safeguard the border. To build a wall along the southern border, I’ll dispatch my construction workers from the Pine Island Bridge. That’s what I’ll do,” DeSantis stated.

In the end, DeSantis said that those who cross the border illegally have effectively been advised that their court dates would be postponed for years.

He questioned, “So then just proceed into the heart of our country — how could that be serving as a deterrent? Therefore, I believe that Florida’s laws have been in place for a very long time. They are what they are, and when you accept that and uphold that, I believe we are stronger as a consequence.”
