Elon Musk said this week that his company, X, which used to be called Twitter, will sue non-governmental groups funded by George Soros for supposedly trying to limit freedom of speech.
Michael Shellenberger, a journalist as well as bestseller author, shared a story by Ben Scallan on X called “Soros-Funded NGOs Demand A Crackdown regarding Free Speech as Politicians are Spreading Hate Misinformation.”
Scallan’s report said that Soros’s charity, Open Society Foundations, gave money to different NGOs to support a “censorship strategy in Ireland and Scotland which involves law enforcement searches of residences, cellphones, as well as computers.”
Scallan said that there are not any additional hate crimes in Ireland, despite what officials said.
Scallan wrote, “It is clear that the rise in ‘hate-based offenses’ is due to more people reporting them, not to more actual hate crimes or ‘incidents.'” Instead, he said that lawmakers are using the “hype concerning hate” to enact “a strict new ‘hate speech’ legislation” in an “unprecedented attack” on the freedom of citizens.
“Government leaders have said that the law is meant to ‘restrict freedom’ and ‘make it more simpler to get charges and sentences.'” Scallan kept going. “What’s more, the bill changes the law so that the person who is accused of trying to spread alleged ‘hate’ material has to show their own proof of innocence.”
Shellenberger wrote on X in response to Scallan’s piece, “Politicians and NGOs supported by George Soros claim ‘hate incidents’ have been on the rise, but they are not. The numbers demonstrate the opposite: the acceptance of minorities has grown greater than ever and getting higher. They spread false information about hate to make a case for a harsh crackdown on the freedom of speech.”
Musk responded to Shellenberger’s post by saying that his platform will go to court to stop discrimination and support freedom of speech.
“Exactly,” said Musk. “X is going to go to court to stop this. Can’t wait until Discovery begins!”
The New York Times said in 2016 that Soros had promised $10 million to fight hate crimes.
He stated to Time that “dark forces that became awakened” by the 2016 election were to blame for the rise in hate crimes against immigrants and other groups.
Soros said, “We have to do something to stop what’s going on here.”
Soros wanted to give $5 million to “community-based and civil society groups.” Time said that the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of these groups, was given money to keep track of hate crimes in the United States.
In March, the FBI said that there were 12% more hate crimes in 2021 than the year before. The agency said that data demonstrated that almost 65% of the 12,411 people who had been reported as victims had been picked on because of their cultural or racial background.
