Despite the state’s enormous budget shortfall, the California state senate is debating a plan that would allow jobless individuals who are here illegally in the nation to qualify for unemployment benefits.
As Breitbart News revealed earlier this week, California’s state budget went from a $100 billion surplus in just one year—partially due to federal funding for coronavirus relief—to a startling $32 billion deficit.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D) updated budget included a warning to lawmakers to exercise “prudence.” However, SB 227 would allow “excluded” employees who are unlawfully present in the nation to collect $300 a week in benefits.
According to supporters, migrant laborers “rightfully” deserve the benefits even if they entered the country illegally, as Fox News reported:
“The Los Angeles Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution in favor of the statewide legislation in March.”
“We can’t take people’s money, taxes, and labor and at the same time refuse them the essential rights and benefits that they truly deserve and that they’ve earned,” Supervisor Shamann Walton said during a protest before the board meeting.
“According to the Safety Net for All Coalition, a coalition of more than 120 groups working to provide access to social services for undocumented employees in California, payroll taxes on illegal immigrants bring in $485 million annually. According to the proposed law, the weekly checks and administrative costs would cost $356 million in state dollars.”
Due to $30 billion in false claims during the epidemic, California’s unemployment compensation system is already contentious. The state recently missed a payment on a federal loan to pay for benefits.
